Ignacio Poncio enters his sixth year as the head coach for the HU men’s tennis program.
This past spring, Poncio led the Foresters to the NAIA National Championships for the first time since 2011. Throughout his tenure, the program continues to earn national recognition having climbed as high as #19 in the NAIA national polls in the spring of 2024. After back-to-back fourth place finishes in the Crossroads League standings during his first two seasons at the helm, the Foresters claimed second the past three years. His athletes have enjoyed 15 All-Conference honors and two All-American praises.
No stranger to campus, Poncio was a standout tennis player at HU having graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2019 with a double major in Business Management and Marketing. He was a four-time All Conference honoree, a feat only five other players in program history can boast.
After playing at the No. 2 spot as a rookie, Poncio camped out at the top spot for the next three years during which he guided his team to a pair of third place finishes and a fourth place finish in the league standings.
In addition to bringing playing experience to the position, he also has several years of coaching experience under his belt. Poncio spent a season as an assistant at HU. He also has over five years of experience giving private lessons and his resume includes coaching at Tenis Par Ciegos and Cordoba Golf Club.
