Foresters shutout Cleary in home opener

HUNTINGTON, Ind.  – The Huntington women's soccer team picked up their first win of the season against Cleary in their home opener Tuesday afternoon at King Stadium. The Foresters blanked their guests 2-0 with Ireland Aerni notching the shutout in net.

The junior keeper finished with four saves thanks to a solid backline that only gave up five shots on the afternoon.

Today's win avenges HU's 2-1 loss to the Cougars last season.

The Foresters took the lead ten minutes in when Paige Weiss, just inside the 18, blasted a shot far post on a pass from Katie Hooley. It proved the game-winner with Sophie Shepherd adding an insurance goal 25 minutes later.

Jiana Simons set the stage for Huntington's second goal when she, from midfield, sent a ball long that Shepherd tracked down, juked the keeper and then lasered a shot upper 90 far post for her first collegiate goal.

While it was a scoreless second half, HU controlled the middle of the park in the final 45 minutes to ride out the clean sheet.

With this win, Huntington moves to 1-1 on the season. Lewis and crew are back in action next Wednesday, August 30, at IU South Bend for a 5:00 p.m. kick-off with the Titans.

The Huntington University Foresters compete in 18 intercollegiate sports for men and women. In the past decade, Huntington has produced 154 NAIA All-America honors and 501 All-America Scholar Athlete honors. Huntington University is a comprehensive Christian college of the liberal arts offering graduate and undergraduate programs in more than 70 academic concentrations.
