HU Comes Up Short In National Tournament

Mobile, Ala. - The Huntington University men's tennis team qualified for the national tournament as the #21 seed and took on the #12 seed Cumberland University in the opening match of the 73rd Annual NAIA National Championships. The doubles duo of Pablo Lopez Real and Martin Capdevilla won the #2 doubles matchup, while Cristian Rodriguez and Juan Carrasco dropped the #3 doubles matchup. The Foresters #1 doubles duo of Andres Jimenez and Julian Tantera were in an epic shopwdown for the crucial doubles point against the Cumberland pair of Julian Parada and Vitor Ferreira. The back and forth set went the distance as the Phoenix earned the win in the 7-5 tiebreaker. Tantera and Santiago Sarudiansky each earned a point in singles to keep the Foresters' hopes alive, but third set victories by Cumberland in #1 and #4 singles were too much for HU to overcome. The Foresters' trip to the 24-team single elimination NAIA National Championships was the first since 2011. Coach Ignacio Poncio's veteran crew finished the season with a 12-5 record.
