Long returns to HU as pitching coach
HUNTINGTON, Ind. – HU softball head coach Tim Averill continues to build his coaching staff having most recently hired Molly (Long) Sterrett as the program's pitching coach. In addition to her work with pitchers, the Huntington alum will also help with game-day strategy, fundraising and player development.
"The Forester softball program is thrilled to bring Molly back to HU," said head coach Tim Averill. "Molly dominated the field as a player, and I am excited for her to bring that mentality to our pitching staff."
Sterrett spent the last 12 years giving private pitching lessons in her hometown of Logansport with ten of her athletes having gone on to play collegiately. Her coaching experience also includes four years as an assistant at Logansport High School.
Indisputably one of the best pitchers to sport a Forester jersey, Sterrett finished her career with 63 wins, a program record that still stands. She also holds the school record for career starts with 90 and career appearances with 117. She faced 2,357 batters and gave up only 511 hits, 105 walks and 179 earned runs while striking out a program-best 654 batters.
Sterrett was a three-time All-Conference honoree which included being tabbed the Mid-Central Conference Pitcher of the Year as a junior. That year saw her limit batters to a .200 batting average and post a 1.22 ERA, the lowest of her career and a single-season school record.
Sterrett was inducted into Huntington's Hall of Fame in 2021. She graduated from HU in 2012 with a BS in Business Management. She is currently a business teacher at Century Career Center. She, her husband Benjamin and three kids reside in Logansport.
