Foresters bounce back to secure road split

Goshen, Ind. – The Huntington softball team capped off their regular-season series against Goshen with a Saturday split, dropping the opener 9-5 before returning the favor with a 6-2 victory in the nightcap. With the split, the Foresters officially claim the series, having swept the Maple Leafs earlier this season.

Game one saw HU fall into an early 4-0 hole after two innings. The Foresters showed life in the third with a pair of RBI-doubles, Jess Duvall delivered the first to right-center followed by Gena Moore's two-run rip down the right field line.

However, Goshen responded with five runs over the next three innings to stretch their lead to 9-3. Josslynn Harbert later crossed the plate on a sixth-inning double steal, and Maddie Duvall added an RBI-single in the seventh, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit.

Goshen outhit HU 11-7 in the opener. Moore led the offense with a 2-for-4 performance, driving in two runs. Jess Duvall also notched two hits and an RBI. Kinzie Mollenkopf took the loss in the circle, allowing seven runs on eight hits while striking out three in 4.1 innings of work. Her second K of the day proved the sophomore ace's 100th strikeout of the season.

The Foresters found their stride in game two, fueled again by Moore's hot bat. The junior first baseman plated HU's first run with a single up the middle in the opening frame, then came through with a two-run knock to right in the fifth.

Huntington added insurance runs down the stretch. Kylie Fisher chipped in with an RBI-single in the sixth, while Maddie Goheen and Maddie Duvall each laced RBI-doubles in the seventh to seal the win.

While HU's offense was on display, Fisher made a momentum-shifting defensive gem in the third. With two runners aboard, Goshen's Brinleigh Arredondo was robbed by Fisher who brought what would have been a three-run homer back from over the right field fence for the third out of the inning.

Moore finished the day 5-for-8 with five RBI across the two games. Jess Duvall stayed red-hot, going 3-for-4 in game two. The pair accounted for more than half of HU's nine hits in the nightcap.

Karlee Franklin was lights-out in relief, tossing four innings of hitless, scoreless softball with five strikeouts to earn the win.

With the split, Huntington improves to 28-15-1 overall and 17-12-1 in Crossroads League play. The Foresters return home Tuesday to host Saint Francis at 3:00 p.m.
